What Is CDS 1 2027?
CDS stands for Combined Defence Services. UPSC conducts the examination to select candidates for training at different defence academies. Depending on their eligibility and preferences, candidates can apply for the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Indian Air Force Academy or Officers’ Training Academy.
The written examination tests candidates in English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. Candidates applying for IMA, INA and AFA must appear for all three papers, while OTA candidates appear for English and General Knowledge.
Candidates who qualify in the written examination are considered for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, subject to the prescribed conditions. Final admission depends on merit, eligibility, medical fitness and the availability of vacancies.
CDS 1 2027 Eligibility Criteria
Before applying for CDS 1 2027, candidates should check their age, educational qualifications, nationality and marital status against the requirements for their preferred academy. The exact date-of-birth limits and other conditions will be specified in the official notification scheduled for 2 December 2026.
CDS 1 2027 Educational Qualification
Academy | Educational Qualification |
Indian Military Academy (IMA) | Degree from a recognised university or equivalent qualification |
Indian Naval Academy (INA) | Degree in Engineering |
Air Force Academy (AFA) | Degree from a recognised university with Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level, or a Bachelor of Engineering degree, subject to applicable conditions |
Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) | Degree from a recognised university or equivalent qualification |
Candidates in the final year of their degree course may also be eligible, subject to the conditions specified in the official notification and the requirement to submit proof of passing within the prescribed period.
CDS 1 2027 Age Limit
The age limit differs according to the academy. IMA, INA, AFA and OTA have separate age and marital status conditions. Candidates should not rely only on a general age range because UPSC specifies the acceptable dates of birth for each course in the notification.
For AFA, additional conditions may apply to candidates holding a valid Commercial Pilot Licence. Candidates must verify the applicable age, marital status, educational and other requirements before submitting an application.
Nationality and Other Requirements
Candidates must satisfy the nationality requirements prescribed by UPSC. The applicable rules cover Indian citizens and certain other categories specified in the notification.
Candidates must also meet the academy-specific physical and medical standards. Meeting the educational qualification alone does not guarantee eligibility for admission.
CDS 1 2027 Exam Pattern
The CDS written examination consists of objective-type questions. The number of papers and total marks depend on the academy selected by the candidate.
CDS Exam Pattern for IMA, INA and AFA
Subject | Maximum Marks | Duration |
English | 100 | 2 hours |
General Knowledge | 100 | 2 hours |
Elementary Mathematics | 100 | 2 hours |
Total | 300 | 6 hours |
Candidates applying for IMA, INA and AFA must appear for all three papers. Each paper carries 100 marks and has a duration of two hours.
CDS Exam Pattern for OTA
Subject | Maximum Marks | Duration |
English | 100 | 2 hours |
General Knowledge | 100 | 2 hours |
Total | 200 | 4 hours |
Candidates applying for OTA do not have to appear for the Elementary Mathematics paper.
CDS 1 2027 Marking Scheme
The CDS examination uses negative marking for incorrect answers. The written examination consists of objective-type questions, and candidates should understand the marking scheme before attempting the papers.
- Correct answers receive marks according to the question's assigned value.
- Incorrect answers attract a penalty of one-third of the marks assigned to that question.
- No penalty is applied for questions left unanswered.
- Candidates must follow the examination instructions regarding the use of answer sheets and permitted materials.
For accurate preparation, candidates should consult the marking instructions in the official CDS 1 2027 notification.
CDS 1 2027 Syllabus
The CDS syllabus covers English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. Candidates should prepare according to the papers required for their chosen academy and revise the important topics regularly.

Important topics include:

CDS 1 2027 Selection Process
The CDS selection process involves the written examination, SSB interview, medical examination and final merit list. Candidates must satisfy the prescribed requirements at every stage to be considered for admission.
Stage 1: Written Examination
Candidates first appear for the CDS written examination. The papers depend on the academy selected in the application. Candidates must qualify according to the applicable standards and meet the other eligibility requirements.
Stage 2: SSB Interview
Candidates who qualify in the written examination are called for the SSB interview, subject to the applicable conditions. The SSB process assesses suitability for a career as an officer in the Armed Forces.
The SSB process generally consists of two stages.
Stage I: Screening Test
- Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests
- Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT)
Candidates who qualify Stage I proceed to Stage II.
Stage II: Assessment
- Psychological tests
- Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks
- Personal interview
- Conference
The assessment considers candidates' suitability for officer training. Candidates should prepare by developing communication, reasoning, awareness and problem-solving skills rather than focusing only on memorising answers.
Stage 3: Medical Examination
Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a medical examination according to the prescribed standards. Medical fitness is an important requirement for admission to the respective academy.
Stage 4: Final Merit List
UPSC and the relevant authorities prepare the final merit list according to the applicable rules, examination performance, SSB marks, eligibility, medical fitness and available vacancies. Qualifying the written examination or receiving an SSB recommendation does not automatically guarantee final admission.
CDS 1 2027 Preparation Strategy
A structured preparation plan helps candidates cover the syllabus, revise important concepts and identify weak areas before the examination. Since CDS 1 2027 is scheduled for 11 April 2027, aspirants should establish a consistent study routine and monitor their progress through regular practice.
1. Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern
Start by reviewing the syllabus and examination pattern. Candidates preparing for IMA, INA and AFA should allocate time to all three subjects, while OTA candidates should focus on English and General Knowledge.
2. Prepare a Realistic Study Timetable
Divide your available study time among the subjects according to your strengths and weaknesses. Set daily and weekly targets for completing topics, revising concepts and practising questions.
3. Practise Previous-Year Question Papers
Previous-year papers help candidates understand question formats, recurring topics and the level of difficulty. Attempt papers under timed conditions and review every incorrect answer.
4. Take Regular Mock Tests
Mock tests help improve speed, accuracy and time management. Analyse your results after each test to identify topics that require additional practice. Avoid taking tests without reviewing your mistakes.
5. Strengthen English and General Knowledge
Read regularly to improve comprehension and vocabulary. For General Knowledge, combine static subjects with current affairs revision. Make concise notes that can be revised quickly before the examination.
6. Improve Mathematics Accuracy
Candidates appearing for the Mathematics paper should practise arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and mensuration. Focus on understanding methods and solving questions accurately instead of relying only on shortcuts.
7. Begin SSB Preparation Early
Develop communication skills, stay informed about current affairs and practise reasoning exercises. Understanding the SSB process early can help candidates prepare alongside their written examination studies.
