NDA 1 2027 is on 11 April 2027, about 24 weeks away. GAT carries 600 of the 900 written marks. Most aspirants spend their hours on Maths and leave GAT for March. That’s where the written cut-off slips.

This NDA GAT preparation strategy covers the 600-mark split, subject-wise tactics, a 24-week timetable built around boards, and how many questions to attempt.

Quick answer: How to prepare for NDA 1 2027 GAT

  1. Know the 600-mark split
  2. Finish NCERT science by December
  3. Practise English 30 minutes daily
  4. Cover History and Geography from NCERT
  5. Track current affairs from October
  6. Take weekly full-length mocks from February

What Should You Know About NDA 1 2027 GAT Before Preparing?

The NDA GAT (Paper II) carries 600 marks, divided into English and General Knowledge. Candidates must attempt 150 objective-type questions within 2.5 hours.

Section

Questions

Marks

Part A: English

50

200

Part B: General Knowledge

100

400

Total

150

600

Marking Scheme: +4 for correct answers, −1.33 (approximately) for incorrect answers and no penalty for unattempted questions.

How Are the 600 GAT Marks Divided in NDA 1 2027?

GAT is a single 150-minute paper (2:00 PM to 4:30 PM) with 150 questions. Each correct answer earns 4 marks, and negative marking deducts 1.33 for each wrong one. English and GK share one booklet and one clock.

Here’s how the marks split, and what each section needs from you:

Section

Marks

Priority

What does it need from you?

English

200

High

Daily practice; the rules never change

Physics

100

High

Clear concepts and everyday applications

History & Freedom Movement

80

Medium

NCERT reading and short notes

Geography

80

Medium

NCERT plus regular map practice

Chemistry

60

Medium

Basics, formulae and everyday products

General Science

40

Low

Quick biology and solar system revision

Current Events

40

Low

Monthly notes, defence news first

Put simply, GK outweighs the whole Maths paper (400 vs 300 marks), and English plus Physics make up half of GAT. Start there. For topic-by-topic coverage, see the full NDA GAT Syllabus 2027.

Subject-Wise Strategy for NDA 1 2027 GAT

The sections below run in order of marks, so your time follows the score.

English (200 Marks): How to Build Accuracy Without Grammar Overload

You don’t need a thick grammar book. You need 20-30 minutes of timed practice daily on the question types UPSC repeats:

  • Error spotting and sentence improvement: Learn the rules for tenses, articles, prepositions and subject-verb agreement, then test them on PYQs.
  • Vocabulary: Note each new word from past papers with one synonym and one antonym.
  • Comprehension and ordering: Solve one passage and one jumbled-sentence set daily.

How Hindi-Medium Students Can Prepare for NDA GAT English

Read one English editorial a day and underline any sentence you can’t break down. Keep a mistake notebook too. The same errors tend to repeat, so revising it weekly lifts accuracy fast.

Physics, Chemistry and General Science (200 Marks): Start With NCERT

These three subjects make up half of GK; take them in weightage order: Physics, Chemistry, then General Science.

Is NCERT Enough for NDA GAT Science?

Mostly, yes. NCERT Science from Classes 6 to 10 covers the core of what UPSC asks; PYQs then show you the depth it actually tests.

  • PCM students: Your Class 11-12 Physics and Chemistry overlap with GAT, so board revision doubles as NDA prep.
  • Non-PCM students: Stick to Class 6-10 concepts and PYQ favourites like motion, light, electricity, acids and the human body.

Solve each chapter’s PYQs the same day; everyday application questions, like how a safety fuse works, then stop feeling random.

History and Geography (160 Marks): What to Cover First

Both are static, so what you learn in October still counts in April.

  • History: Start with the Freedom Movement and modern India, then cover Indian Polity basics and the major world revolutions.
  • Geography: Begin with physical geography (Earth, atmosphere, climate), then move to Indian climate, resources, agriculture and industries.

Use NCERT Social Science from Classes 6 to 10 and turn each chapter into one page of notes. Mark rivers, ports and mineral belts on a blank map weekly.

Current Affairs (40 Marks): Which Months Matter for NDA 1 2027?

Cover the 8 to 10 months before the exam, roughly mid-2026 to March 2027. UPSC doesn’t fix a window, so treat this as a practical range.

Prioritise defence exercises, appointments, awards, government schemes and space missions. Use PIB releases for schemes and defence news. Keep one page of notes per month and revise it every Sunday.

How Many Questions Should You Attempt in NDA GAT?

There's no magic number. Your safe attempt count depends on accuracy, which only mocks can measure honestly.

A blind guess on four options averages out to roughly zero. Rule out two options, and that guess is worth about +1.33 marks on average.

The rule: attempt only when you can eliminate at least two options.

English and GK share one booklet, so fix your section order in mocks.

"Toppers don't attempt the most questions in GAT. They know which ones to leave." - Saurabh Singh, Academic Director, Major Kalshi Classes

How to Use PYQs, Mock Tests and Negative Marking to Improve Your GAT Score?

NDA previous-year questions (PYQs) reveal exam patterns, while timed mock tests help improve speed, accuracy and question selection.

How Should You Analyse Your GAT Mock-Test Results?

  1. Record Attempts: Count correct, incorrect and unattempted questions.
  2. Calculate Scores: Apply +4 for correct and −1.33 (approximately) for wrong answers.
  3. Identify Mistakes: Separate knowledge gaps, careless errors and time-management issues.
  4. Revise and Retest: Review weak topics and reattempt incorrect questions.

Example: 80 correct, 30 incorrect and 40 unattempted answers give 280/600 marks.

How Can You Reduce Negative Marking?

Avoid blind guessing. Three incorrect answers cancel one correct answer. Eliminate options using your knowledge and monitor accuracy after every mock test.
