The NDA 2 2026 selection process has three stages: the UPSC written exam (900 marks), a five-day SSB interview (900 marks) and a medical examination. The final merit list is calculated out of 1800, so the SSB carries as much weight as the entire written paper.
Yet most candidates spend a year on Maths and GAT and barely two weeks on the SSB. That gap is where many selections are lost.
With the written result expected shortly, this guide explains what happens on each SSB day, what assessors look for, how the medical works, and how to prepare before your call letter arrives.
What Are the Stages of the NDA 2 2026 Selection Process?
Every candidate clears five steps in this order:
- Written exam: Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT), held by UPSC on 13 September 2026.
- SSB Stage 1: Screening through the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT).
- SSB Stage 2: Psychological tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, personal interview and conference.
- Medical examination: A detailed fitness check at a military hospital.
- Final merit list: UPSC ranks candidates against available seats.
Stage | Marks | Counts towards merit? |
Mathematics | 300 | Yes |
GAT | 600 | Yes |
SSB Interview | 900 | Yes |
Medical | — | No (fit or unfit only) |
Total | 1800 |
The medical carries no marks, but an unfit verdict ends your candidature regardless of rank.

What Should You Do Right After the NDA 2 Written Result?
Download the result PDF from upsc.gov.in and search for your roll number with Ctrl+F.
If the Army is your first preference, register on joinindianarmy.nic.in within the deadline, usually two weeks, and book your SSB date. Navy and Air Force first-preference candidates get call-ups from their own service. Missing the window can cost you the slot.
Which SSB Centre Will You Get?
Army candidates go to one of four Selection Centres: Prayagraj (Allahabad), Bhopal, Bengaluru or Kapurthala.
How Does the 5-Day SSB Interview Work?
The SSB is a five-day assessment of whether you have the qualities to train as an officer. Apart from the OIR, there is nothing to memorise. Different assessors observe you through different tests, looking for one consistent personality.
Day | Stage | Tests | What's being judged |
0 | Reporting | Document check, PIQ form | Eligibility |
1 | Screening | OIR, PPDT | Reasoning, perception, group expression |
2 | Psychology | TAT, WAT, SRT, Self Description | Natural thought patterns |
3–4 | GTO | Group and outdoor tasks | Teamwork, leadership |
2–4 | Interview | Personal interview with the Interviewing Officer | Background, motivation, consistency |
5 | Conference | Board meeting | Final recommendation |
Day 1: Screening Test (OIR and PPDT)
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
The Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test assesses verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Candidates may face questions based on:
- Series and sequences
- Analogies
- Coding-decoding
- Logical reasoning
- Figure-based problems
- Basic numerical ability
Because the test is time-bound, candidates need both speed and accuracy rather than lengthy problem-solving.
Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
PPDT is a test where you see a hazy picture for 30 seconds, write a story on it in four minutes, then narrate it and discuss it with your group.
- View the picture for 30 seconds.
- Note the characters, their age, gender and mood (1 minute).
- Write the story (4 minutes).
- Narrate it to the group in about a minute.
- Discuss as a group and agree on a common story.
What If You're Screened Out?
You return home the same day. Screening doesn't bar future attempts, so you can face the SSB again through your next eligible entry.
"Assessors aren't marking your story like an English paper. A simple, positive story narrated confidently will take you further than a dramatic plot you can't defend in the discussion." - Saurabh Singh, Academic Director, Major Kalshi Classes
Day 2: Psychological Tests
Screened-in candidates spend Day 2 on four timed written tests set by the psychologist.
- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): 12 pictures, the last one blank. You get 30 seconds to view each and 4 minutes to write a story.
- Word Association Test (WAT): 60 words shown for 15 seconds each. Write the first sentence that comes to mind.
- Situation Reaction Test (SRT): 60 everyday situations to respond to in 30 minutes.
- Self Description Test (SDT): What your parents, teachers, friends and you think of you, in 15 minutes.
The psychologist reads all four together. Memorised "ideal" responses usually contradict each other somewhere, and assessors spot that quickly.
Key Takeaway: The SSB doesn't test what you know. It tests whether the same person shows up in your stories, your group tasks and your interview.
Days 3–4: Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
The Group Testing Officer (GTO) spends two days watching how you work with 8 to 10 strangers.
Indoor Tasks
- Group Discussion: Two rounds on current topics.
- Group Planning Exercise: Solve a scenario as a team, then write your own plan.
- Lecturette: A three-minute talk on a topic you pick from a card.
Outdoor Tasks
- Progressive Group Task: Cross obstacles as a group using planks, ropes and a load.
- Half Group Task: The same, with half the group.
- Group Obstacle Race (Snake Race): Race through obstacles as a team, carrying a snake-like rope.
- Individual Obstacles: Ten obstacles alone, against the clock.
- Command Task: You lead two or three candidates through an obstacle.
- Final Group Task: One last group obstacle.
Shouting the solution first isn't leadership. The GTO watches who listens and keeps the group moving.
Prepare before you report: Rehearse the lecturette and GD with MKC's GD & Lecturette for SSB Interview book, or see our best SSB interview books guide.
Personal Interview: What Does the Interviewing Officer Ask?The personal interview is a one-on-one conversation with the Interviewing Officer (IO), built largely on the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) you filled out on Day 0. Expect questions on family, school, friends, hobbies, current affairs and why you want to join the forces. Many IOs also ask rapid-fire sets, such as your Class 10 and 12 marks, best and worst subjects and favourite teachers, all in one go. These test memory and composure, not perfection. Pro Tip: Re-read your PIQ the night before. Contradicting it is the easiest mistake to avoid. |
Day 5: Conference and Results
On the final day, you appear before the full board for a brief interaction, often just a question or two. The assessors then decide on each candidate together. Recommended candidates stay back for the medical; the rest leave the same day.
What Qualities Does the SSB Look For?
Every test above measures the same 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), grouped into four factors. You don't need to show all of them perfectly, but no factor can be badly weak.
Factor | Officer Like Qualities |
Planning & Organising | Effective intelligence, reasoning ability, organising ability, power of expression |
Social Adjustment | Social adaptability, cooperation, sense of responsibility |
Social Effectiveness | Initiative, self-confidence, speed of decision, ability to influence the group, liveliness |
Dynamic | Determination, courage, stamina |
Is the SSB Pattern Changing in 2026?
You may have seen headlines claiming OIR and PPDT have been scrapped. Here's where things actually stand.
- Two computer-based tests have been proposed for Stage 1: the Computerised Stage One Selection System (CSSS) and the Objective Personality Assessment Measure (OPAM).
MKC faculty confirm that SSBs currently running for NDA candidates still use OIR and PPDT. Any change will come only through an official notification.
Prepare for the existing pattern, and track updates only on official service websites.
How Does the NDA Medical Examination Work?
Recommended candidates undergo a detailed check at a military hospital.
- Special Medical Board (SMB): The first full examination.
- Appeal Medical Board (AMB): Available if the SMB declares you unfit.
- Review Medical Board (RMB): A further review in limited cases.
Common reasons for temporary rejection include:
- Wax in the ears
- Overweight or underweight
- Deviated nasal septum
- Enlarged tonsils
- Eyesight beyond permitted limits
- Untreated dental problems
- Tattoos outside permitted areas
Many of these can be corrected in advance, so get a basic check-up now. The full standards are in the UPSC notification.
How Is the NDA Final Merit List Prepared?
UPSC ranks candidates on their combined written and SSB score, but only those declared medically fit make the list. Seats are then allotted by rank, service preference and vacancies.
Expect a wait: the NDA 2 2025 final result came out on 8 April 2026, about seven months after the written exam.
How Major Kalshi Classes Prepares Students for the SSB?
Major Kalshi Classes is based in Prayagraj, the same city as one of the Army's four Selection Centres. Our faculty have seen this process up close for years, and our SSB training mirrors it stage by stage.
- Screening: OIR practice sets and mock PPDT rounds with group discussion, in classroom and online batches.
- Psychology: Timed TAT, WAT and SRT practice, with feedback that keeps answers natural, not scripted.
- Interview: Mock interviews built around your own PIQ.
For self-study, MKC Publications's How to Crack SSB Interview, SSB Work Book and OIR Test for SSB Interview cover each stage. Or see how past students cleared theirs.
Conclusion: Your Next Steps After the NDA 2 Written Exam
Clearing the written exam earns you a seat at the SSB, not selection. The SSB rewards one consistent personality; most medical issues are fixable in advance, and starting preparation before your call letter arrives is the biggest advantage you can give yourself.
