India has achieved another big milestone in its defence journey with the successful test of the Agni-5 long-range ballistic missile on 21st August 2025. The test, carried out from Chandipur in Odisha, proved that the missile is fully operational and reliable.

Developed by the DRDO, Agni-5 is the most advanced missile in the Agni series and is designed to strengthen India’s nuclear deterrence and overall security.

Boost to India’s Nuclear Deterrence: India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-5 Missile

India has successfully test-fired the Agni-5 long-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, on 21st August 2025.

This test confirmed that all technical and operational features of the missile are working perfectly, marking a big step forward in the country’s defence capabilities.

The Agni-5, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is the most advanced missile in the Agni series.

It plays a key role in India’s land-based nuclear deterrent and ensures strong defence against potential threats.

Key Features of Agni-5 are:

  • Range: Can strike targets over 5,000 km away.

  • Warhead Capacity: Capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 1.5 tonnes.

  • Lightweight Materials: Built with modern composite materials that make it more reliable and efficient.

MIRV Technology

A standout feature of Agni-5 is its use of Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.

This means one missile can carry multiple warheads and hit different targets at the same time, greatly increasing its effectiveness in any conflict situation.

Guidance & Accuracy

The missile uses highly advanced systems for accurate targeting:

  • Ring Laser Gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System (RLG-INS)

  • Micro-Inertial Navigation System (MINGS)

  • Support from satellite navigation such as India’s NavIC and the US GPS

These systems help Agni-5 hit targets with pinpoint accuracy.

Propulsion & Launch

  • Uses a three-stage solid-fuel propulsion system for long-range reliability.

  • Can be launched from a cannisterised platform, which allows quick deployment, easy transportation, and higher mobility—making it harder for enemies to track and target.

Recent Upgrades

Agni-5 has been upgraded with:

  • Improved avionics (electronics for guidance and control)

  • Stronger heat shielding for re-entry into the atmosphere

  • More advanced guidance systems

This successful test proves that India is strengthening its nuclear deterrent capability and boosting its defence preparedness at a time of changing regional and global security challenges.
