India's missile exports are entering a new phase. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh told ANI that BrahMos exports are expected to cross USD 600 million. He also said the Akash surface-to-air missile system has now been sold to three countries.

The two programmes show India moving from a buyer of high-end weapons to a credible seller.

BrahMos: India's Export Benchmark

Singh called BrahMos a benchmark for India's export story. The supersonic cruise missile has contracts or agreements with three Southeast Asian nations. The Philippines has already received systems worth around USD 330 million. Indonesia's deal is projected at about USD 200 million and Vietnam's at roughly USD 100 million.

Singh also cited the missile's combat use in Operation Sindoor. He pointed to its air-launched variant, integrated with the IAF's Su-30MKI fighters, which widens its appeal to foreign air forces.

Akash: A Homegrown Success Story

Akash was developed by DRDO and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It is a short-range SAM with a range of 25-30 km. The newer Akash-NG extends this to around 50 km.

Armenia was the first export customer and signed for multiple Akash-1S batteries in 2022. Tajikistan and Turkmenistan followed, even though both have traditionally relied on Russian air defence systems.

The missile was conceived in 1983 at DRDL Hyderabad under Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and took more than 15 years to develop. Singh said production has now stabilised, and more orders are expected.

Record Defence Exports in FY 2025–26

These missile deals are part of a wider export surge. India's defence exports reached an all-time high of Rs 38,424 crore in 2025–26, up 62.66% from Rs 23,622 crore the year before. DPSUs contributed Rs 21,071 crore and the private sector Rs 17,353 crore.

Indian defence equipment now reaches more than 80 countries. The ministry expects exports to touch Rs 50,000 crore within two years.

Why Does It Matters for Defence Aspirants?

NDA, CDS and AFCAT candidates should treat this as high-priority current affairs. Likely question areas include BrahMos buyers, Akash's developer and range, Operation Sindoor, and the latest export figures. These are also strong topics for SSB lecturettes and group discussions.
