In a major crackdown on corruption in medical education, the CBI arrested a senior doctor associated with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for allegedly accepting a ₹10 lakh bribe from a private medical college in Karnataka.
The bribe was reportedly given in exchange for a favourable inspection report. Taking swift action, the NMC has blacklisted the assessor and penalised the college by cancelling its seat renewals and new course applications for the 2025-26 academic year.

1.NMC Takes Strict Action After Bribery Incident Involving Medical College Inspection
In May 2025, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior doctor who was working as an Assessor with the National Medical Commission (NMC).
He was caught taking a bribe of ₹10 lakhs just after conducting an inspection of a private medical college in Karnataka. The bribe was allegedly given in exchange for a favorable inspection report.
Following this, the CBI registered an FIR(First Information Report) against some of the Assessors, college authorities, and other unknown individuals. The case is currently under investigation.
The NMC has taken this issue very seriously and has blacklisted the concerned Assessor, at least until the investigation and court proceedings are completed.
As a strong warning to others, the NMC has also decided to penalize the involved medical college. The following strict actions have been taken against the college:
Renewal of existing UG and PG seats for the academic year 2025-26 will not be approved.
The college’s applications to increase seats or start new courses for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) levels for the 2025-26 academic year will be cancelled and not processed.
The National Medical Commission does not directly employ Assessors. Instead, it delegates senior faculty members from government medical colleges across India.
These faculty members volunteer for the job, and are randomly selected through a system for conducting inspections of other medical institutions.
The NMC has reiterated that it is fully committed to integrity and transparency in all its operations. It follows a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, whether the offense is by an Assessor, college, or any other stakeholder.
Under the NMC Act, the Commission has the legal power to take strict actions against those who violate rules. These actions may include:
Imposing financial penalties
Withholding applications for new courses or schemes for one or more academic years
Reducing student intake for future years
Stopping admissions to one or more courses
Recommending disciplinary action under Government Servants Conduct Rules
Referring the case to the Ethics and Medical Registration Board
The NMC has advised all medical colleges and stakeholders to strictly follow rules and regulations, and to maintain professionalism, integrity, and public trust in the medical education system.
The Commission continues to work toward ensuring high standards in the medical profession and education across the country.
