As a part of an initiative, India and Australia are working more closely on defence and intelligence matters. Lieutenant General DS Rana, who leads India’s Defence Intelligence Agency, will visit Australia from March 19 to 21, 2025 to build stronger ties between the two countries in sharing intelligence, improving regional security, and exploring new ways to work together in the Indo-Pacific region.

India-Australia Intelligence Ties Gets a Boost: Strategic Shift

Lieutenant General DS Rana, the head of India’s Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), will visit Australia from March 19 to 21, 2025.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said this visit is meant to strengthen defence intelligence cooperation and deepen the strategic relationship between India and Australia.

During the trip, Lt Gen Rana will meet with top Australian defence officials, which will include the following people:-

  • Deputy Secretary of Department of Defence

  • Director General of National Intelligence

  • The Chief of Defence Intelligence

  • The Chief of Joint Operations from the Australian Defence Forces (ADF)

These meetings will focus on how both the countries will share their intelligence to maintain regional security in the Indo-Pacific and also explore more ways to work together.

The DIA is the main agency that handles all military intelligence for India. It was created after the Kargil conflict to improve the country’s defence and security setup and it works under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS), led by CDS (Chief Defence Officer).

This visit comes shortly after India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, visited Australia from March 4 to 7, 2025.

During his trip, General Chauhan also held key discussions with top Australian military leaders, including: Chief of Defence Force General Admiral David Johnston, Defence Secretary Greg Moriarty and Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Lt Gen Rana’s visit will include a tour of the Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) to understand how Australia runs its joint military operations and a  meeting with the Director of the Australian Geospatial Organisation (AGO) and a visit to the Lowy Institute, where he’ll take part in talks about defence and security issues in the region.

He will also pay tribute to Australia’s martyrs by the act of laying a wreath at the Australian War Memorial and attending the Last Post Ceremony which is a traditional event for mourning the dead.

This visit will reflect the growing cooperation between India and Australia in intelligence and defence as it highlights the goal of both the countries of keeping the Indo-Pacific region peaceful and secure, according to the MoD.
