India is set to test a powerful new missile called the ET-LDHCM ( Extended Trajectory-Long Duration Hypersonic Cruise Missile ), a fully homegrown hypersonic weapon that can fly at incredible speeds, strike faraway targets, and is nearly impossible to stop.Developed by DRDO under a secret project, Project Vishnu, it could give India a major edge in defence and change the regional power balance.
ET-LDHCM Missile Marks Major Milestone in Indigenous Defence Technology
India is getting ready to test its most advanced hypersonic missile yet – the Extended Trajectory-Long Duration Hypersonic Cruise Missile (ET-LDHCM).
This missile has been fully developed in India under DRDO’s secret Project Vishnu. It can travel at speeds up to Mach 8 (around 11,000 km/h) and strike targets deep inside enemy territory, including China and Pakistan.
This puts India among the few nations like the US, Russia, and China, those with operational hypersonic weapons.
Key Features of ET-LDHCM are as follows:-
Can carry warheads weighing 1,000–2,000 kg
Has a range of about 1,500 km
Built for both nuclear and conventional attacks
Extremely fast and hard to detect or intercept
Can change direction mid-flight, making it even harder to stop
It uses a special scramjet engine that uses air from the atmosphere to burn fuel, allowing it to stay at hypersonic speeds for longer. This engine has already passed a major ground test that lasted over 1,000 seconds.
Unlike regular ballistic missiles, ET-LDHCM flies lower, adjusts its path mid-air, and is made of special materials that can handle very high temperatures (up to 2,000°C).
It can be launched from land, air, or sea platforms, giving India a lot of strike options. It’s accurate and can target enemy radar sites, ships, command centres, and bunkers.
This is India’s second big success with hypersonic tech in under a year, after a previous test in November 2024. Once fully tested and ready, it will be deployed across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Besides military use, experts say this tech could also help in space missions, disaster relief, and boost Indian aerospace industry. Indian defence companies and small businesses are also part of this project, creating local jobs and innovation.
Therefore, the ET-LDHCM is a game-changing missile that gives India major new power in defence, with speed, flexibility, and near-impossible-to-stop accuracy.
