HAL Fixes Russian Supply Issues, Ensures Su-30 MKI Fighter Jets Stay Battle-Ready

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s state-run aerospace and defence company, has successfully overcome major supply problems from Russia that had been affecting the maintenance of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Su-30 MKI fighter jets.

These jets are the main strength of the IAF, with more than 250 in active service.

The Su-30 MKI is built in India under license by HAL but still depends heavily on spare parts and components from Russia.

In 2024, there was a serious challenge in getting these supplies, mainly because Russian factories were focused on meeting their own country’s defence needs due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director, D.K. Sunil, recently told aviation magazine Flightglobal that the situation has now improved. “We’ve been in regular discussions with them, and we’re getting the supplies,” he said.

Continuous communication with Russian partners helped solve the problem.

This solution is significant because, earlier, delays in getting parts had already raised concerns about how quickly HAL was able to repair and overhaul the jets, which could have resulted in IAF’s overall readiness for combat.

Thanks to HAL’s quick action as the supply flow has been restored, ensuring the jets remain ready for any mission.

This incident also gave HAL more reason to speed up efforts to become self-reliant, in line with the Indian government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission.

HAL is now working harder to build more parts in India and even service important systems like the AL-31FP engines of the Su-30 MKI locally.

While keeping the current Su-30 MKI fleet in top shape, HAL is also looking to the future.

The company is leading projects like the Tejas Mk2, a better version of India’s homegrown fighter jet, and the AMCA, a future fifth-generation stealth aircraft.

By solving today’s challenges and planning for tomorrow, HAL continues to be a key part of India’s air defence and military strength.
