The CDS 1 2027 exam pattern explains the written examination structure, subject-wise marks, duration, negative marking, and SSB interview weightage for candidates preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

CDS 1 2027 Exam Pattern: IMA/INA/AFA vs OTA Papers

Combined Defence Services Examination. The written examination differs for candidates applying to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers' Training Academy (OTA).

Candidates applying for IMA, INA and AFA must appear for English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. OTA candidates take only English and General Knowledge. Each written paper carries 100 marks and lasts two hours. The established pattern is documented in UPSC's CDS examination notice; candidates should check the official CDS 1 2027 notification when it is released to confirm the applicable instructions.

Important areas include:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Indian Polity
  • Economics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry

  • Current Affairs
  • Environment and related topics

Aspirants should combine static-subject preparation with regular current-affairs revision. Previous-year questions can help them understand the style and level of questions asked.

3. Elementary Mathematics Paper

The Elementary Mathematics paper carries 100 marks and lasts two hours. UPSC specifies the standard of this paper as matriculation level.

Major topics include:

  • Arithmetic and number systems
  • Algebra
  • Trigonometry
  • Geometry
  • Mensuration
  • Statistics

Candidates should strengthen their basic concepts, revise formulas and solve questions under timed conditions. This paper is included for IMA, INA and AFA candidates but not for OTA candidates.

CDS 1 2027 Exam Pattern for OTA

Candidates applying for the Officers' Training Academy appear for two written papers: English and General Knowledge. There is no Elementary Mathematics paper for OTA.

English Paper for OTA

The English paper carries 100 marks and lasts two hours. OTA candidates should prepare grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, comprehension and other language-related topics.

General Knowledge Paper for OTA

The General Knowledge paper also carries 100 marks and lasts two hours. Preparation includes history, geography, polity, science, economics and current affairs.

Can OTA Candidates Also Apply for IMA, INA or AFA?

Candidates should select academies according to their eligibility and preferences in the application form. If a candidate is appearing for IMA, INA or AFA as well as OTA, they must take the Mathematics paper required for the former academies. The OTA written assessment itself is based on English and General Knowledge.

CDS 1 2027 Negative Marking Scheme

Negative marking is an important part of the CDS examination. UPSC's established rule deducts one-third of the marks assigned to a question for each incorrect answer. If a candidate marks more than one option, the response is treated as incorrect.

Negative Marking in English and General Knowledge

In recent CDS papers, English and General Knowledge have 120 questions for 100 marks. Based on that distribution, each correct answer is worth approximately 0.833 marks.

  • Correct answer: approximately +0.833 marks
  • Incorrect answer: approximately −0.278 marks
  • Unattempted question: 0 marks

Negative Marking in Elementary Mathematics

Recent Elementary Mathematics papers have 100 questions for 100 marks.

  • Correct answer: +1 mark
  • Incorrect answer: approximately −0.333 marks
  • Unattempted question: 0 marks

These values are calculated from the recent question distribution and the one-third negative-marking rule. Always check the question paper and official instructions for your examination cycle.

CDS Negative Marking Calculation: Examples

The following examples illustrate how negative marking can affect a candidate's score.

Example 1: English or General Knowledge

Suppose a candidate answers 80 questions correctly and 20 incorrectly in a paper with 120 questions carrying 100 marks.

Particulars

Calculation

Marks

Correct answers

80 × 0.833

66.67

Incorrect answers

20 × 0.278

−5.56

Estimated score

66.67 − 5.56

61.11

The score is approximate because the marks per question are fractional.

Example 2: Elementary Mathematics

Suppose a candidate answers 60 questions correctly and 15 incorrectly.

Particulars

Calculation

Marks

Correct answers

60 × 1

60

Incorrect answers

15 × 0.333

−5

Estimated score

60 − 5

55

The remaining questions are unattempted and attract no penalty.

CDS 1 2027 Exam Duration and Schedule

Each CDS written paper lasts two hours. The papers are ordinarily conducted in separate sessions on the same examination day. Candidates should check the official timetable and admit card for the confirmed reporting time, session timing and examination-centre instructions.

General Knowledge

2 hours

Elementary Mathematics

Total for IMA, INA and AFA

6 hours across three sessions

Total for OTA

4 hours across two sessions

The total examination time does not include reporting, security checks or other centre procedures. Follow the instructions printed on the admit card.

CDS Written Exam and SSB Interview Marks

The CDS selection process includes the written examination and an SSB interview for candidates who qualify and are called for the next stage. The written and SSB marks are allocated according to the academy.

The SSB interview assesses candidates' intelligence, personality and suitability for the officer selection process. Candidates should prepare for both stages rather than focusing exclusively on the written examination.

CDS 1 2027 Qualifying Marks and Cut-Off

UPSC may prescribe minimum qualifying marks for individual papers and determine the written cut-off used to shortlist candidates for the SSB interview. The final cut-off depends on the examination cycle, academy, vacancies and candidates' performance.

Candidates should distinguish between:

  • Minimum qualifying marks: The minimum marks required in individual papers, as prescribed by UPSC.
  • Written cut-off: The aggregate marks used for shortlisting candidates for the SSB interview.
  • Final cut-off: The aggregate marks of the written examination and SSB interview used in the final merit process.

Do not treat an expected cut-off or a previous year's cut-off as a guaranteed qualifying score for CDS 1 2027. Check the official UPSC result and cut-off announcements when available.

Preparation Strategy Based on the CDS Exam Pattern

Understanding the exam pattern is only the first step. Candidates should use the paper structure to organise their study time and practice.

For IMA, INA and AFA Aspirants

  • Give regular time to all three papers.
  • Practise English grammar and comprehension.
  • Revise static General Knowledge and current affairs.
  • Solve Mathematics questions topic by topic.
  • Attempt timed mock tests for each subject.
  • Analyse incorrect answers and revise weak topics.

For OTA Aspirants

  • Focus on English and General Knowledge.
  • Practise language questions regularly.
  • Build a consistent current-affairs and static-GK routine.
  • Solve previous-year papers and full-length mock tests.
  • Review errors and revise difficult topics.
  • Learn about the SSB selection process alongside written preparation.

How to Manage Negative Marking

Candidates should avoid random guessing. Read each question carefully, eliminate options when possible, and make decisions based on their understanding of the topic. After each mock test, review both incorrect answers and questions answered correctly by guessing.

A test-analysis notebook can help track recurring errors, improve accuracy and identify topics that need more practice.

CDS Preparation Resources at Major Kalshi Classes

Major Kalshi Classes (MKC) offers defence-exam learning resources for candidates preparing for CDS and other defence examinations. Aspirants can explore the MKC website for current course information and available preparation options.

Students can also review the CDS study material for relevant books and resources. The MKC Learning App may provide access to live or recorded classes, study resources, mock tests and assessments depending on the selected course and current availability.

Before enrolling, verify the latest programme details, course duration, fees, and included facilities through the official MKC channels.
