The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are planning to upgrade the Hawk Mk132 Advanced Jet Trainers. 

These aircraft are mainly used to train fighter pilots, and the modernization will add new avionics, radar, and training systems so that they can better prepare pilots for flying modern jets like the Rafale, Su-30MKI, Tejas Mk2, and the upcoming AMCA.

Next-Generation Upgrade Planned for IAF’s Hawk Fleet

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have started talks to modernize the IAF’s BAE Systems Hawk Mk132 Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs). 

The goal is to improve these aircraft so they can better prepare pilots for flying modern fighters like the Rafale, Su-30MKI, Tejas Mk2, and the upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

This upgrade will mainly focus on adding new avionics (advanced electronic systems) and features that bring the Hawks closer to today’s combat aircraft.

Why the Upgrade is Needed

The Hawk Mk132 entered service with the IAF on 23 February 2008 and is the backbone of Stage-III training at Air Force Station, Bidar (Karnataka). 

India currently operates 123 Hawks: 106 with the IAF and 17 with the Navy, making it one of the largest Hawk fleets in the world.

The aircraft is powered by the Rolls-Royce Adour Mk871 turbofan engine and already includes modern features like

  • Three digital cockpit displays

  • Hands-On-Throttle-and-Stick (HOTAS) controls

  • Night Vision Goggle (NVG)-compatible cockpit

It bridges the gap between basic jet trainers like the HAL Kiran and high-performance fighters. Pilots use the Hawk to train for missions such as air combat, navigation, and ground attack.

But now, with the IAF inducting advanced 4.5- and 5th-generation fighters, the Hawks need upgrades so training remains realistic and effective.

The Hawk-i Program: A Testbed for Upgrades

In 2017, HAL unveiled the Hawk-i, a modified Hawk Mk132 with upgraded, mostly Indian-made systems. This served as a proof-of-concept for modernization.

Key features of the Hawk-i include

  • Indigenous Mission Computer: Dual-redundant computer with digital map display for better pilot awareness.

  • Softnet Radio: Secure communication and data link, with customizable Human-Machine Interface (HMI).

  • Embedded Virtual Training System (EVTS): Allows pilots to simulate combat scenarios, sensors, and weapons use.

  • Weapons Integration: Proven ability to fire DRDO’s Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) and MBDA’s ASRAAM missile, giving the Hawk light attack capability.

The Hawk-i has even been tested for counter-insurgency (COIN) and close air support (CAS) missions. 

Its maneuverability, low operating cost, and survivability make it a good option as a backup light attack aircraft for the IAF.

Planned Modernization Features

Building on the Hawk-i and the Advanced Hawk concept (a joint HAL–BAE Systems project shown at Aero India 2017), the IAF and HAL are discussing the following upgrades for the entire Hawk Mk132 fleet:

  1. Advanced Radar Systems: To train pilots on modern sensor usage.

  2. Upgraded Avionics Suite: New cockpit layouts with features like BAE’s LiteHUD (low-profile head-up display) and large-area glass displays, similar to fighters like the F-35 or Tejas Mk2.

  3. Synthetic Training Capabilities: More advanced simulation via EVTS, cutting down training time on costly frontline aircraft (potentially reducing up to 30% of the current Rafale/Su-30 training load).

  4. Countermeasures & Sensors: Indigenous countermeasure dispensers, missile approach warning, and possibly a scaled-down Uttam AESA radar.

  5. Weapons Compatibility: Wider weapon integration, including beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles like ASRAAM and precision-strike weapons like SAAW.

  6. Defensive Aids: Radar warning receivers, ground proximity alerts, and collision avoidance systems for safer training.

  7. Combat Enhancements (from Advanced Hawk): Potential addition of air-to-air refueling and aerodynamic improvements like a redesigned wing.

Why This Matters

These upgrades will help the Hawk Mk132 simulate modern fighters more effectively, ensuring smooth pilot transition from training aircraft to frontline jets.

They also expand the Hawk’s role from just a trainer to a light combat aircraft that can perform limited missions if required. 

Most of these upgrades are planned to be developed and implemented in India, strengthening HAL’s production capabilities and the IAF’s training system.
