The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) latest satellite mission which was aimed at deploying the Earth observation satellite EOS-09, faced a setback on May 18 because the trusted PSLV-C61 rocket experienced an issue on its third stage, preventing the completion of the mission as planned.

Third Stage Malfunctioning Disrupted ISRO’s 101st Launch

ISRO’s 101st satellite launch aiming to deploy the Earth observation satellite experienced an unexpected setback on Sunday, May 18.

The mission was progressing smoothly using the PSLV-C61 until in the third stage it experienced an issue which prevented its success.

Based on the statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), ISRO confirmed, “Today, the 101 launch was attempted. PSLV-C61’s performance was normal up to the second stage.Due to an observation in the third stage, the mission could not be accomplished.”

  • According to V. Narayanan, ISRO Chairman, said the rocket's first and second stage operated as they were expected. “The PSLV is a four- stage vehicle. The third stage ignited correctly, but we noticed a drop in chamber pressure during its operation, which affected the mission outcome,” he added during a press briefing.
    • The PSLV-C61 was lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 5:59 am IST.

This highlighted the 63rd flight of the PSLV and 27th time of an upgraded version designed to carry heavier payloads i.e. PSLV-XL variant which is used by ISRO.

The third stage of PSLV is critical because it uses a solid rocket motor which provides thrust after the vehicle exits Earth’s atmosphere.

It is made to specially deliver up to 240 kilo newtons of thrust.

Unfortunately, the mission was not successful because there was a  drop in the pressure in its third stage which prevented its completion.

Chairman Narayanan provided assurance as he added that the ISRO is thoroughly analysing the data to understand what exactly went wrong and that it will be addressing the issue swiftly.

He further added, “We are studying the entire performance and will come back at the earliest.” during the press briefing.
