In a touching tribute to the Indian Armed Forces, families in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district have begun naming their newborns “Sindoor”- a symbolic gesture honoring the bravery shown during Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the tragic Pahalgam terror attack.

This emotional trend reflects a deep wave of patriotism and collective gratitude sweeping through the community.

Newborns Named “Sindoor” in Honor of Armed Forces

In a heartfelt show of gratitude towards the Indian Armed Forces, families in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district have begun naming their newborns ‘Sindoor’- a powerful tribute to the soldiers who carried out Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory strike following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

At least 17 babies born in Kushinagar on May 9 and 10—just days after the military operation—have been given the name ‘Sindoor.’

For the families, it’s more than just a name; it’s a living symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and national pride.

Neha Gupta, a young mother, shared her reason for choosing the name for her daughter: “My baby was born two days after our soldiers struck back. While my heart aches for the families who lost their loved ones, I’m also filled with pride. Naming her ‘Sindoor’ is my way of saying thank you to those who protect us.”

Traditionally, ‘Sindoor’ is the red vermilion worn by married Hindu women, symbolizing marital commitment.

But in the wake of recent events, the word has taken on a new meaning. In Kushinagar, it now stands for courage, sacrifice, and the spirit of unity that binds the nation.

Dr. R.K. Shahi, principal of the Government Medical College in Kushinagar, confirmed that all 17 babies born at the hospital during this period were named ‘Sindoor.’ “There was a strong emotional undercurrent in the maternity ward,” he said. “It was clear that these families weren’t just naming their children—they were honoring the spirit of the nation.”

The tradition of naming a child in eastern Uttar Pradesh typically falls to the paternal aunt. But in these cases, parents have taken the naming into their own hands, driven by a sense of national pride and personal emotion.

For Archana Shahi of Bhedihari village, the decision to name her unborn daughter ‘Sindoor’ was made even before delivery.

“To me, Sindoor now means courage,” she said. “This is how we honor the brave souls who laid down their lives for us.” Her husband, Ajit, echoed the sentiment: “Our peace and safety come from their sacrifice. This is the least we could do.”

Local activist Rajesh Mani sees the trend as a reflection of the community’s deep emotional connection to the armed forces. “Many families here have members serving in uniform. This gesture is about pride, respect, and shared sacrifice.”

As these children grow up carrying a name that now symbolizes more than tradition, their very identity becomes a tribute to a defining moment in recent national memory. In Kushinagar, the name ‘Sindoor’ has become a quiet but powerful symbol of remembrance and reverence.
